Ben Shelton Comes Into Full Focus

In a riveting U.S. Open semifinal against Frances Tiafoe, the twenty-three-year-old showed that his composure and problem-solving are as central to his game as his extraordinary athleticism.

As a kid, Ben Shelton played quarterback. You can tell. First, there’s his serve. The classic image of a server is statuesque—arm back, back arched, feet balanced, ball suspended, a moment of potential and poise. Shelton’s explosive action calls to mind Patrick Mahomes, not a trophy pose. Then there is the way he carries himself, with that peculiar mix of unselfconscious confidence, a kind of swagger that would come off as cockiness if it weren’t counterbalanced by a kind of calm, earned self-regard.

For years, anxiety about the state of American tennis—it has been twenty-three years since an American man won a Grand Slam—produced a common lament that the country’s best athletes chose football or basketball instead. Shelton, who is a six-foot-four physical marvel, obviously could have. But his father had been a professional tennis player—rising to No. 55 in the world—and had become an accomplished college tennis coach. His mother had played tennis, too, and then his sister picked up a racquet. Shelton fully committed to tennis as an adolescent, and went to the University of Florida, where his father coached and his sister played. Shelton won a national title and then turned pro, in 2022. When he arrived on tour, he had an awesome, flawless serve and not much else. Four years later, he has the classical technique and astonishing bounce of Baryshnikov, and his mind is catching up. Now he is twenty-three years old and headed to the U.S. Open final after beating his countryman Frances Tiafoe in four sets on Friday night, 4–6, 6–3, 6–3, 7–5, in a riveting match that seemed to represent, as tennis often does, something beyond sports.

It was the first time that two Black American men had played a semifinal at the tournament. Tiafoe is twenty-eight. He had been in the U.S. Open semifinals two times before. His parents came to the U.S. from Sierra Leone. His father worked as a custodian at a top tennis center in Maryland, where he had an office—a little more than a hundred square feet—big enough for Tiafoe and his twin brother to sleep in while their mother worked a night shift as a nurse. Tiafoe started playing tennis and showed some talent, and a coach noticed. He became a top junior—a gifted athlete with soft hands, lethal power, and the imagination and smarts to do anything he wanted with the ball on the court. But, even now, every time he hits his unorthodox forehand—a quick pullback with the stringbed parallel to the ground, followed by a sudden and violent snap of the wrist—it’s impossible to forget that he is essentially self-taught.

On Friday night, Tiafoe was the better player in the first set. The tour’s summer hard-court swing has always brought out the best in him. The joke was that in late summer he became August Foe, not merely a charismatic shotmaker but suddenly one of the best tennis players in the world. There was something to it: the lights of New York, the alchemical mixture of his abundant charisma, and the energy of the crowd. He’d announced himself at Arthur Ashe Stadium in 2017, pushing Roger Federer to five sets, showing off his appealing creativity and astonishing speed. But almost a decade later he is no longer a prodigy, no longer just an inspiring story. During last year’s off-season, he decided to overhaul his approach and commit to a more professional routine—to “make every day feel the same,” as he put it after the quarterfinals, so that summer success would come to seem more like an expectation than an intermittent miracle.

He nearly lost this past Tuesday, in the quarterfinals, to another young American, Alex Michelsen. But after Michelsen let him back into the match with a few ill-timed double faults, Tiafoe rediscovered his game, and squeaked by with a victory in a tense fifth set. He was steady enough afterward to support his disconsolate opponent, who sobbed on his shoulder.

Tiafoe, the eleventh seed, was a slight underdog against Shelton, who came into the match as the eighth seed, but he had almost a full season of good habits and solid wins to rely on, and was poised to break into the top ten in the rankings. In the match’s early going, he was placing his serve, and his forehand—as wonky in technique as ever—was working well, particularly down the line; the short backswing and vicious cuts had certain advantages when the timing landed, especially paired with his blazing footspeed. It let him press forward.

Shelton, meanwhile, looked a little nervous, spraying errors. He double-faulted to give up a service break, and dropped the first set before he began to settle. Then his serve started clicking. The serve has always been his biggest weapon—perhaps, at the moment, the biggest weapon on the tour. He can spin the ball into the service box with such a ferocious kick that it explodes off the court high around the returner’s shoulders, or skid it along a line and send it swerving out of reach, or simply crush it at nearly a hundred and fifty miles per hour. By the end of the match, he had twenty aces. Tiafoe had three.

After the first set, Shelton started to hold games easily, which put pressure on Tiafoe’s service games, and his steadying ground game applied even more, particularly to Tiafoe’s weaker second serve. He took the second set and went up a break in the third. With Tiafoe serving, down 3–5, he threatened to break again, which would have allowed him to start the fourth set with the advantage, on his own serve. His father watched from the box with his usual calm half smile, looking more like a proud parent than Shelton’s coach, which he’s said is the intention. Occasionally, Shelton’s father offered some insight or suggestion. He has said that he prefers to ask his son questions rather than give instructions, so that Shelton can come to his own understanding. “Problem-solving has been the name of the game here,” Shelton said after the match, no doubt echoing his father. The problem he faced at the end of the third set of the match was urgent. Tiafoe was battling.

And there it was, finally, at the center of Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest tennis stadium on earth: tennis. During the first two weeks of the U.S. Open, the focus had been on seemingly anything but—on TikTokers and Honey Deuce-fuelled finance bros and chicken nuggets that cost a hundred dollars. Partway through the tournament, the U.S. Open announced a Kalshi partnership. The matches themselves, as thrilling as they were, had seemed beside the point. Then Shelton upset Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion who came into the quarterfinals with an eighteen-match winning streak at the Grand Slams, in a thriller, and now two players at the top of their form were trying to become the first American man in more than two decades to win the U.S. Open. Tiafoe and Shelton had everyone’s attention.

The game stretched on for twenty points, in fifteen minutes. It started to feel existential. Shelton was moving around the court in bouncy, balletic movements, showing no signs of fatigue from the marathon win over Alcaraz, which had ended at three-thirty-three on Wednesday morning. Tiafoe was more reactive, and often more creative in his responses, including scooping up one of the most remarkable lobs I’ve ever seen. But he also started to look more tired. On Shelton’s fourth set point, a Tiafoe forehand hit the net. Still, Tiafoe wasn’t done fighting. He had chances on Shelton’s serve in the first game of the next set, as the two players extended point after point with their athleticism, stretching the court in every dimension. But Shelton held on in that game, and as the fourth set went on his determination seemed to grow.

Tiafoe double-faulted on match point and Shelton hardly celebrated—perhaps out of respect for his friend Tiafoe, whom he said afterward was like an older brother, but also because by the time the moment arrived he was ready for it. In 1991, his father was the first Black American since Arthur Ashe to win a professional tennis tournament. Now Shelton stood at the center of the court named after Ashe and looked like he belonged where he was. ♦
