Cul-de-Sac
死胡同

Like all tyrants,
my mother made
decrees. The last
straw was the law
that said: no frogs
inside the house.
The lousy universe!
I was seven and ready
to flee with nothing. At
least take a sandwich,
my mother said,
tucking a foil brick
into the kerchief
I’d tied to a stick. I
was a real hobo.
I barely watched her
watch me walk off.
I got all the way
to the cul-de-sac
and sat down to eat.
It was a sandwich
full of grief––
grief and salt,
grief and tomatoes,
grief and cheese.
How far into
far did I go?
How is it
my glass of milk
was still cold
when I got home?
像所有暴君一样,我母亲也颁布法令。最后一根稻草是那条规矩:不准把青蛙带进屋里。这该死的世界!那年我七岁,准备两手空空地出走。至少带个三明治吧,母亲说,把一块锡纸包塞进我系在棍子上的手帕里。我成了真正的流浪汉。我几乎没看她目送我离开。我一直走到那条死胡同,坐下来吃东西。那是一个装满悲伤的三明治——悲伤和盐,悲伤和西红柿,悲伤和奶酪。我究竟走出了多远?为什么回到家时,我那杯牛奶还是凉的?
